99 Days of a Training is a 99-part series that I will document my daily progress towards my first marathon. Each day I plan on recognizing a word or phrase that corresponds with that dayâs training. This series will conclude on May 6th, 2012 when I toe the start line (or somewhere in the back of the pack) at the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati, OH.
Phrase of the day: think of others
It is easy to forget the toll that marathon training can take on others. While you are out getting in your 30+ miles a week, in most cases someone else is out there enabling this to happen. In my case it is my wonderful wife Jessica and our two boys. I am very thankful for them, especially since they have been very understanding through this whole endeavor. Fortunately, I have done my due diligence in being very flexible. My weekday runs have all been after they left for school. On weekends I only have 1 run, and that is typically done in the afternoon of Saturday. This allows me to let my wife sleep in late, spend some time with the kids then aim for running during their nap time. While that doesn’t always work out, it still has been a great plan.
If you have someone who enables your running, be sure to thank them. Tonight, I’m doing just that by caving to my ‘no pizza’ rule. It isn’t that I hate pizza, but the amount of slices you need to fill you up causes an insane amount of caloric intake. But, my wife has been wanting pizza so tonight it is. All thanks to Papa Johns and their free pizza + 2-liter.
